Fuzhou, in South China, means ‘Good Luck City’ and is the capital of Fujian province with a population of 7 million. Fuzhou has a humid subtropical climate with long, hot and humid summers and mild, dry and short winters. Fuzhou is home to over 100 bird species and one of the city’s main birdwatching locations is the Minjiang Estuary Wetland Reserve, covering over 3,000 hectares and ranks as Fujian Province’s largest estuary. The extensive mudflats provide abundant food resources for birds and has become a major migratory pit-stop along the East Asian North-South highway. Rare birds such as Black-faced Spoonbills, Great Crested and Chinese Terns can all be seen in Fuzhou’s Minjiang Estuary. In addition, Sanming, around 250km to the north of Fuzhou is a forested montane region home to some of China's most outstanding birds including Elliot's and Silver Pheasants plus Cabot's Tragopan.
